Session 21: Challenges in Biotechnology
Biotechnology has indeed done a lot of good things for the world, vice versa it also has some disadvantages, in agriculture the Transgenic plants are produced by introducing some genetic traits into the gene of the plant , There are also concerns that genetic engineering of crops would reduce their long-term biological potential. The yield of such crops is typically higher than those of conventional crops. Yet there are concerns that overproduction due to transgenic crops may result in effects such as market instability and it leads to impact on production and global Market, Impact on nature, Biodiversity and the ecosystem, There are risks of transferring toxins from one life form to another, creating new toxins or of transferring allergenic compounds from one species to another, which could result in unexpected allergic reactions so it causes various Impacts on Health also.

Modern biotechnology applies not only modern genetics but also advances in other field of sciences. However, there is a third revolution that is just emerging, which is nanotechnology. The development of these techniques is to visualize and manipulate the atoms individually. Nano-scale techniques are now beginning to play substantial role in the applications of biotechnology.
World renowned experts and intellectuals agree that biotechnological innovation is the foundation-stone of our future, and a ‘game changer’. It is anticipated that it will underpin our economy and provide solutions to intractable problems of human beings and animal diseases, food security, fuel alternatives, climate change, as well as improving our quality of life.
Why London:
London is famous for its diversity and it remains as a centre of the much maligned but equally critical financial services sector. While the life sciences industry has propelled towards globalisation, with increasing moves towards markets in Asia and the Southern hemisphere, the UK and London remains a centre of significant innovation for life sciences. London has developed strengths in the following fields: Biotechnology. Microbiology, Stem cells, Oncology, Neurology, Cardiovascular, Infection and Drug delivery.
The Biotechnology Industry in London is currently booming. The city's global role as a centre of excellence in the sector means that many of the scientific breakthroughs that prolong life, cure diseases and increase crop yields are coming from the UK.
The UK’s biotech industry ended last year with a bang, having raised more than twice as much money through initial public offerings (IPOs) in 2017 than the previous year.
A report published today by the Bioindustry Association (BIA) and data firm Informa Pharma Intelligence found IPOs by UK biotech companies raised £234m last year compared with £105m in 2016.
London is undoubtedly one of the biggest hubs for biotech companies in Europe. A recent study revealed that the British capital was the one that received most life sciences investment in 2017, by far. Still, it has a lot of competition from the other two cities in the “golden triangle” — Oxford and Cambridge.

Why you should attend conference/lectures?
In this digital age, conferences and face-to-face meeting are increasingly being substituted by webinars, video conferences and other forms of digital communication. There are some clear advantages with digital communication such as convenience, cost and time savings. Despite these advantages, the impact of communicating in person is much higher and is backed by scientific evidence. According to a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience, during face-to-face communication, synchronization of brain activity between partners occur leading to successful exchange of information. Besides, frequent eye-contact during face-to-face communication helps build trust between individuals and produce better outcomes such as increased creativity and productivity. Hence, conferences and meetings are necessary even in a world dominated by digital communication channels.
